Big Takeaway: Sam Altman was unexpectedly fired as OpenAI CEO by the board over the weekend. But there is so much more to the story.
Here’s What We Know
Following Altman's departure, CTO Mira Murati was appointed interim CEO, while co-founder Greg Brockman tendered his resignation.
Some OpenAI executives and investors, including Microsoft, are trying to reinstate Altman as CEO. OpenAI employees went on strike, saying the board needed to step down and rehire Sam or they would all quit.
They gave the board until 5pm on Saturday to step down, and they did step down, but not until Sunday evening.
Before being ousted, Altman was actively shaping regulatory responses to AI and raising funds for a chip venture.
Microsoft saw a minor stock drop after Altman's exit but maintains its commitment to the OpenAI partnership.
Sam took to X/Twitter and said he loves the OpenAI team, and he even tweeted that this would be the last time he has a guest access badge.
Less than 12 hours ago, Ilya Sutskever (OpenAI Chief Scientist) confirmed Sam is not returning as CEO and they hired Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Twitch 🤯 Dozens of OpenAI staff have quit following this announcement.

Big Takeaway: Meta has reportedly broken up its Responsible AI team as it shifts focus to generative AI.
Most RAI members will join Meta's generative AI product team, others will work on AI infrastructure.
Meta says it remains committed to developing AI responsibly despite dissolving the dedicated team.
The RAI team had already been reduced earlier this year with layoffs reported. RAI was created to address risks like biased training data and moderation issues. But it reportedly lacked autonomy, with lengthy approvals needed for initiatives.
